Sharing Your Dreams:
Telepathy
Telepathy is one of those abilities used and abused by the movies and television, in science fiction and comic books, as well as by speculators of military applications of psi. The idea that one person can gain an awareness of what’s in another’s mind is at the same time both more and less than what most people think of when they hear the word telepathy. It’s not mind reading and it’s not a direct communications link-up of two minds—though there can be mutual or shared experiences, especially in dreaming. No one can directly and deeply access the mind, the thoughts, the emotions of another, at least as far as we know. If such a person were to exist, it’s unlikely that he or she would step forward to disclose that ability. It would probably freak most of us out.
Experiences of telepathy seem to revolve around a basic awareness of the general contents of another’s thoughts or emotions. One person is having a particular train of thought or maybe is in a particular emotional state, and the other person has a sudden “knowing” of this and gets the gist of what the sender is thinking or feeling. The exception to this concept is demonstrated in a medium’s communications with a spirit, as this is purely mental interaction. Even if the medium says she is hearing a voice of a spirit, it’s still happening in the mind; it’s telepathic.
People are interested in such connections between people, especially people related to one another (such as mother and child or twins) or very close emotionally (husband and wife or lovers). There are a couple of considerations when looking at the apparent telepathic experiences of people who are so close.
Connections
First of all, one must always consider the non-psychic connection. People who have lived together for a long time (not just in a relationship … this also fits the twins and the parent/child connections) or who simply have really gotten to know each other well in certain situations can often predict how each other will respond in similar situations. I frequently hear “We often know what each other is thinking” … “Sometimes I can start a sentence and s/he can finish it.” One must always consider that two people who know each other well, who have been through many kinds of situations together, might really know just how each other will respond in a particular situation, even to understanding basically what the other would say in that situation. This is not usually a conscious thing.
The other point to take into consideration is that emotion seems to play a big part in psychic experience in general. Two (or more) people emotionally involved often seem to share some sort of above-average psychic linkup. It’s not just that twins are more psychic because of the genetics involved, but rather because of an emotional tie between them.
Telepathic information rears its head in many situations. For example, there are many stories of people knowing when someone close to them is in a crisis, in danger, or even when such a person has died.
